What We Offer:
For folks with socially complex lives
Working with community partners and our hospital colleagues at Peterborough Regional Health Centre, we offer low barrier care to people with complex social lives where life challenges make it difficult to get to regular appointments. This may include:
homelessness (unhoused, tenting, couch surfing, living in a shelter)
substance use (alcohol, fentanyl, coccaine, meth, crack, etc)
complex mental/developmental health issues (PTSD, depression, anxiety, Autism, FASD)
trauma
intimate partner violence
human trafficking
involvement with the criminal justice system
involvement with children’s aid system
experiences of discrimination or stigma within health care.
Our appointments are held in places that client’s feel safe: drop-in centres, methadone clinics, shelters, or safe public locations. We are available 8am-8pm every day of the week by text or call and will provide reminders about appointments and accompany clients to ultrasounds or other meetings. Lab work like blood tests, urine, or vaginal swabs are done by us on site. We work collaboratively with community workers to create wrap around supports. We meet clients where they are to offer the best sexual and reproductive health care possible.
For folks without health insurance
Residents of Ontario may not have health insurance for many reasons. Some came as students and have not yet received a work permit, some found out they were pregnant after arriving in Ontario only to find out their student insurance will not cover them. Others have lived here for many years, contributing to our communities but have remained undocumented for various reasons. We believe everyone deserves access to sexual and reproductive health care.
Midwives in Ontario are funded to work with residents of Ontario who do not have health insurance. Our colleagues at Kawartha Community Midwives and Midwives of Lindsay can offer routine pregnancy care, however they may fill up quickly meaning folks who find out they are pregnant later on may not find space. We encourage you to contact these midwives too - but if they are full, we are very happy to help you!
We will provide you home visits for all of your prenatal and postpartum care. We only offer hospital births at the Peterborough Regional Hospital as we work with a team of obstetricians collaboratively. This means during your labour and birth you will be looked after by the nurses and physicians at the hospital, with support from the midwives as needed.
Blood work and ultrasounds done in the community and any assistance we need from physicians is covered by the specail midwifery funding we have. There are hospital administrative and lodging costs that clients will need to pay.
